Description
  • Porphyrins represent an interesting family of compounds with a broad field of applications. From all of them, we have focused on those based on their strong interaction with light. High molar absorptivity and high quantum yield of fluorescence due to their unique electronic structure based on a cyclic array of adjacent ? orbitals are precursors for applications of porphyrins in analytical sensing development and medicinal therapy based on interaction of a tissue with light. The broad field of the use of porphyrins forces us to divide the chapter into several parts. The most recent achievements in porphyrin synthesis are briefly summarized at the beginning. Part two is devoted to applications in analytical chemistry mainly based on porphyrin spectrochemical sensors development (primarily absorption and fluorescence sensors). Herein, porphyrin derivatives have been utilized in solution and at the gas-solid and/or liquid-solid interfaces. The final part of the review deals with cancer therapy using porphyrins. The approach leading to selective destruction of tumor cells is called photodynamic therapy (PDT) and porphyrins act here as so called photosensitizers. Beside a short general survey of PDT with porphyrins and others photosensitizers, the last development of porphyrin photosensitizers based on their enhanced tumor cells targeting is reviewed.
