Description
  • Nursing is a scientific discipline aimed at providing assistance and support to both healthy and ill persons. The requirements imposed on the care provided change in different periods of human life and the particularities of individual interventions change as well. In order to meet the goals of this discipline, the care must be provided in compliance with recent scientific knowledge, considering the specific individual's needs. This perspective is respected in holistic concept of human, constituting a bio-psycho-social and spiritual unity. In the course of life, in relation to age, life situation and health condition (or occurrence of chronic diseases, respectively), the individual's perception of needs and value orientation can change. It is therefore very important, when viewing a human, to perceive also the concept of quality of life that introduces a new dimension into the care provided. It helps to map the individual's areas that could be disturbed due to the individual's health, the opportunities of self-fulfillment in the society or the performance of common activities. This concept expresses satisfaction with life, with fulfilment of one's opportunities, or it may constitute an impulse to seek new ways of behaviour. The new ways may operate as driving force when seeking new life strategies. The purpose of this article is to present the concept of quality of life and its significance for current nursing. At the same time, it is aimed at presenting the grant project number 120/2012/S %22Reflection of quality of life in nursing%22 that deals with this issue. This project is implemented under support of the Grant Agency of the University of South Bohemia.
