  • Numerous analytical methods are used to detect pathogens agents including methods based on the direct isolation followed by real time-polymerase chain reaction, or immunology tests. There have not been published numerous papers on the using of electrochemical microarrays for detection of viruses and/or bacteria but there is a great potential. Electrochemical detection has been developed and assay performances studied for the CombiMatrix oligonucleotide microarray platform. CombiMatrix core technology is based on a specially modified semiconductor adapted for biological applications, which contains arrays of platinum microelectrodes. The ElectraSenseTM principle is the detection of redox active chemistries proximal to specific electrodes. The target molecules are labelled with a redox enzyme via biotin–streptavidin (or avidin) interaction. Enzymatic oxidation of an electron donor substrate then occurs. The detection current is generated due to electro-reduction of the enzymatic reaction product. Thus
