Description
  • Avascular necrosis (osteonecrosis) of the femoral head is characterized by decay of the bone tissue in part of the femoral head as a result of disruption of the blood supply in the diseased region of the bone. Due to insufficient blood supply, a process of decay within the femoral head may lead to the collapse of a portion of the surface of the femoral head. Currently two treatment practices are used: conservative treatment or surgery. If osteoarthritis develops the surgical solution is usually a total hip replacement. Since patients affected by avascular necrosis are commonly middle-aged or younger (an average onset at 38 years of age while 25% of patients are younger than 25), and due to the limited survival-time of joint implants, other surgical procedures are also implemented (core decompression, cortical bone grafts or osteotomy). To suggest an appropriate therapy or surgical intervention for a given patient, it is useful to estimate how the collapse of a part of the femoral head surface changes (en)

(cs)
  • Biomechanical model of aseptic necrosis has been developed. The model is based on contact analysis and is applicable in clinical praxis as shown in clinical study of twenty patients. Nanomechanics of subcelular principles of osteonecrosis were used. (en)
