Description
| - The major aim of the project is the elucidation of molecular mechanisms underlying the therapeutic effectiveness of compounds isolated from five selected Chinese medicinal herbs with recorded anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects. The subject will be carried out through the bioassay guided fractionation of raw samples leading finally to isolation and identification of pure chemical entities. Several parameters of stimulation or inhibition of the activity of immunocompetent cells will be evaluated: production of nitric oxide, secretion of cytokines/chemokines, production of prostaglandins, and cytotoxic effects. The ultimate goal of the study is discovery of new biological response modifiers, and formulation of novel immunomodulatory drugs prospective in the treatment of immune-related diseases. (en)

| - Byla provedena analýza biologických vlastností extraktů a chemicky čistých látek pocházejících ze dvanácti rostlin tradiční čínské medicíny. Některé preparáty mají výrazný farmakologicky zajímavý imunomodulační potenciál. Např. léčivá rostlina Artemisia annua obsahuje látky, včetně antimalarika artemisininu, které snižují produkci faktorů, podporujících růst nádorů. (cs)
- Screening for biological properties of extracts and chemically identified compounds prepared from twelve plants of traditional Chinese medicine has been done. Some samples possess prominent immunomodulatory activity. Notably, the medicinal plant Artemisia annua contains metabolites, including antimalarics artemisinin, which suppress the production of factors involved in cancer development. (en)
