Description
  • The proposed research seeks to understand the influence of Middle Paleozoic climate and sea-level change on marine community evolution. We will conduct this research by studying 100000-1000000 year sea-level and climatic changes from the Prague Basin (Perunica microcontinent) and the Great Basin (Laurussian continent) and compare these trends to evolutionary dynamics of Early Devonian Gastropoda, Trilobita, and Brachiopoda. Special attention will be paid to the influence of three dramatic, short-lived and widespread bioevents (Klonk, Daleje and Basal Choteč) on the structure of marine communities. Sea-level and climatic changes will be determined using a combination of sedimentology (cyclostratigraphy and sequence stratigraphy), paleontology (community analysis and analysis of evolutionary dynamics of selected model groups), and geochemistry (C and O isotopes).
