| Description
| - Leaf-chewing insects feeding on sixty tree species from 18 families in a lowland rain forest in the Madang area, Papua New Guinea are studied. Large scale sampling where parataxonomists are used to handcollect the insects on selected tree species is carried out. Contrary to the reductionist approach, which targets specific interactions between particular plant and insect species, our multi-species analyses aim at unraveling patterns influencing species richness and host specificity of the entire guild of leaf-chewing species associated with a tree species.The sampling design involve many spatial, diurnal and seasonal replicates over the period of four years. The emphasis is on local patterns that will hold for insects foraging in forest patches, thus being very relevant to the pressing problem of habitat fragmentation and loss of biodiversity in tropics. - Cílem projektu je srovnat faunistickou skladbu, druhovou rozmanitost a potravní specializaci folivorního hmyzu vázaného na 45 druhů též fylogeneticky vzdálených čeledí rostlin. Dále testovat význam lokálních charakteristik pro druhovou rozmanitost.
