| - The project goal is a description and theoretical analysis of modern construction of Chinese traditions and its purposes. Using detailed historical studies of typical representatives, we try to address the question of specific motivation of key actors, the role of state and ideological authorities, the mechanism of deconstruction and construction of traditions, and the resolution of conflicts between modern rationality and the particularism of Chinese national tradition. We will integrate existing theoretical results and scholarly potential of Czech sinological institutions in literary theory and Chinese history with current trends in the expanding field of history of science and technology in China. As China modernised for a long time in a peripheral position to the centres of modern science, it is a hypothesis of this project that the symbolic manipulations with traditions are a form of coping with the forced inequality. Similar situations are found worldwide (including certain phases of Czech history), and it is thus possible to compare the perception of science, development and innovation in different circumstances, the related national mythologies, and their ideological use and abuse. Partial goals: 1. Identification of the most prominent Chinese intellectual positions regarding the relation between traditional culture and modern science. 2. Analysis of the contradiction between the destruction of traditional culture in China by modernisation, and the desire to strengthen national culture through modernisation. 3. A description and analysis of the connection between historiography and philosophy of Chinese science and the value systems (ideologies) of modernisation. 4. Identification of the influences of traditional Chinese culture in the historiography of science, the influences of imported ideologies, and of the general material and social influences of imperial globalisation under inequality. - Cílem projektu je popis a teoretická analýza novodobé konstrukce čínských tradic a jejího účelu. Pomocí detailních historických studií reprezentativních případů se pokusíme zodpovědět zásadní otázky konkrétní motivace klíčových aktérů, role úřadů a ideologických autorit, mechanismů dekonstrukce a konstrukce tradic, a řešení konfliktů mezi moderní racionalitou a partikularismem čínské národní tradice. Integrujeme existující teoretické výsledky a expertní potenciál českých sinologických pracovišť v oblasti literárněvědné a historické s novějšími trendy v rozvíjející se oblasti dějin vědy a techniky v Číně. Čína se dlouhodobě modernizovala v periferním postavení vůči centrům moderní vědy. Hypotézou projektu je, že symbolické manipulace s tradicí jsou formou vyrovnání se s nuceným nerovnoprávným postavením. Podobné situace jsou celosvětově rozšířené (včetně různých etap české historie), a lze tedy rozsáhle srovnávat vnímání vědy, vývoje a inovací v různých podmínkách, související národní mytologie a jejich ideologické využívání a zneužívání. Dílčí cíle: 1. Identifikace nejvýraznějších intelektuálních proudů a pozic v řešení vztahu tradiční kultury a moderní vědy v Číně. 2. Analýza rozporu mezi destruktivním vlivem modernizace na tradiční kulturu a motivací prostřednictívm modernizace achránit a posílit národní kulturní identitu. 3. Popis a analýza propojení historiografie a filozofie vědy v Číně s hodnotovými systémy a sociálně-politickými aspekty modernizace (ideologie). 4. Identifikace vlivů tradiční čínské kultury v historiografii a filozofii vědy, vlivů importovaných ideologií a cizích vzorů, a obecných materiálně-sociálních vlivů modernizace v podmínkách imperiální globalizace a nerovnosti.
