Description	The project %22Separatism, conflicts and sources of tensions in Africa: theories, causes, case studies%22 deals with actual issues of the contemporary Sub-Saharan Africa. After establishment of the new independent states, built on the former colonial boundaries, there have been many attempts to review the existing state borders and to create new state units by separating from the existing ones. In this project I will focus on theoretical conceptions regarding separatist and irredentist tendencies and movements as well as on individual case studies. These are Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Nigeria. Each of these countries represents one type of separatist and irredentist cases originating in specific historical experiences and conditions. Though the Convention of the United Nations as well as the Charter of African Union do not allow formation of new states within the existing ones, in the last fifty years we have experienced many attempts to violate this principle. In 1991, the Republic of Somaliland proclaimed independence. Two years later, Eritrea, a former Ethiopian province, became an independent state. This project will thus examine both general theoretical principles of state crises resulting in potential separation and individual independent cases that need special attention. (en) Cílem projektu je analyzovat separatistické a konfliktní tendence v současné subsaharské Africe, jakož i představit různé způsoby, jakými dochází k těmto událostem. Výsledná monografie tak poskytne dosud chybějící perspektivu na problematiku konfliktů a jejich řešení v zemích subsaharské Afriky.
