| Description
| - This grant project is aimed to test several hypotheses explaining the controversy in the worldwide distribution pattern of angiosperm genome sizes. This project will namely revise formerly observed patterns taking in to the account phylogenetic dependence of observed characters in the design and statistical analyses of experiments, and will test possible limitation of polyploids and larger genomes in phosphorus deficient environments hypothesized recently by Leitch & Leitch (2008) in Science. Seven careful observational and manipulative experiments are designed to test the (i) suspected negative effect large genome size across tropical, temperate and high arctic flora, and in nutrient deficiency adapted groups of carnivorous plants; (ii) phosphorus limitation of larger genomes and polyploids in local floras (subarctic Svalbard, radiating flora of Cape region); and (iii) differences in growth performances of plants with different genome sizes (including comparison of diploid and tetraploid counterparts) in deficient sites using manipulative experiments. - Tento grantový projekt si klade za cíl testovat několik hypotéz vysvětlujících kontroverzi v celosvětové distribuci velikostí genomu krytosemenných rostlin. Projekt bude revidovat zejména dříve pozorované závislosti se zohledněním fylogenetické závislosti znaků v designu a statistickém hodnocení výsledků a bude testovat hypotézu o možné limitaci polyploidů a větších genomů v prostředí s nedostatkem fosforu, kterou v současnosti navrhli Leitch & Leitch (2008) v časopise Science. V rámci sedmi observačních a manipulativních experimentů se bude testovat (i) předpokládaný negativní efekt větších genomů napříč tropickou, temperátní a alpinsko-arktickou flórou a v rámci masožravých rostlin adaptovaných na růst v živinami chudých podmínkách; (ii) limitace polyploidů a rostlin s větším genomem v lokálních flórách (subarktické souostroví Svalbard, radiující flóra západního Kapska); a (iii) rozdíly v růstových vlastnostech mezi rostlinami s různě velkým genomem (zahrnuje srovnání blízce příbuzných diploidních a tetraploidních taxonů) na fosforem nedostatečných stanovištích s využitím manipulativních experimentů.

| - Byly provedeny experimenty pro stanovení faktorů určujících velikost genomu rostlin. Přestože se nepodařilo jednoznačně prokázat roli dostupnosti fosforu v evoluci velikosti genomu, byly generovány nové hypotézy a zajímavá srovnání, část výsledků se podařilo publikovat ve kvalitních časopisech. Nebyly vyčerpány všechny plánované prostředky, další shromážděná data mají vysoký publikační potenciál. (cs)
- Project allowed conducting experiments addressing the determinants of plant genome size. Although the role of phosphorus availability was not unequivocally demonstrated, new hypotheses were generated as were other interesting comparisons. The results were partly published in high quality journals. Although not all the financial resources were utilized, remaining data could be well publishable. (en)
