Description	The role of the reception of scepticism in the formation of modern thought is now widely recognized, mainly due to the seminal work of Richard Popkin (1960, 42003). Since the 1970's there is a rapid growth of interest in ancient scepticism itself, and in the past decade emerges also the topic of its possible precursors, among them in the first place Socrates. The present project has twofold focus: on the one hand specialized detailed studies, on the other the general conception of modern philosophy as seen in the light of new research. The project's main output should be a scholarly book on David Hume and a text-book on early and middle modern philosophy. Other output should include papers on Socrates, Academic scepticism and Pyrrhonism, and Descartes. The project continues with the applicant's work that has been done in the past ten years: a thesis on Hume (2001), papers on Descartes (2002, 2003), on early modern philosophy (2005, 2006) and on Socrates and scepticism (2004, 2006, 2008). One of the project's aims is to make internationally available the work existing only in Czech at the moment. (en) Hlavními výstupy projektu jsou (a) větší práce o Davidu Humovi, (b) učební text dějin rané a vrcholné novověké filosofie, a (c) série čtyř mezinárodních workshopů/konferencí se sborníkem. Vedlejší výstupy mají zahrnovat dílčí studie na téma Sókratés, akademická skepse a pyrrhonismus, a Descartes.
