Description
  • In neurodegenerative conditions, such as Parkinson´s disease, neuronal death is effected by a cascade of intracellular processes, where the supposedly important role of metals is poorly understood. Apart from synchrotron radiation x-ray fluorescence with its high sensitivity and a nanorange spatial resolution, ion beam microanalysis, may provide two-dimensional maps of chemical element distribution inside neurons. Combining two analytical methods utilising particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS), that are to be implemented shortly in ÚJF, may allow to perform such quantitative measurements for many intracellular elements and to construct maps of element distribution within subcellular structure of healthy and dying neurones. Dying neurones can be identified from their elevated levels of iron and zinc in their somatas. Following this identification, more detailed mapping of the elemental content within the intracellular structures of neurones will be also carried out with PIXE/RBS method for lighter elements at various stages of neuronal death.
