Description
| - We will survey Lepidoptera communities feeding on plant species from four large genera, ranging from widespread to locally endemic, at five sites in the montane rainforests of Papua New Guinea. Together with pre-existing results, we will obtain a unique set of community insect data from a regularly spaced network of sites covering a 300 x 800 km area of rainforest in two mutually isolated montane ranges and the intervening lowlands. This design will permit the partitioning of Lepidoptera diversity among the alpha and beta components within and between the lowland and montane rainforests, as well as the first analysis of its kind of the effects of host specificity, host distribution, environmental factors and geologic history on the beta diversity of tropical Lepidoptera on large geographic scales. The information on the determinants of large-scale distribution of biodiversity is vital for designing conservation strategies in New Guinea, one of the three remaining world’s tropical wilderness areas. The study is important also for student training in Czech Republic and New Guinea. (en)

| - Velmi úspěšný projekt organizačně i publikačně, s mnoha a vynikajícími výstupy (všechny ale s vícenásobnou dedikací), projekt značně rozšířil poznání o hmyzích společenstvech a potravních řetězcích v tropech, zahrnul velké množství studentů, mezinárodních spolupracovníků a domorodců, efektivně využil relativně malých zdrojů k mezinárodnímu impaktu české vědy. - Very successful project, both in terms of organization and publication outcome, though all the paper with multiple funding acknowledgment. Project greatly improved our understanding on insect communities and food chains in the tropics, involved many students, international colleagues and indigenous people, and effectively used limited resources for great international impact of Czech science.
