| Description
| - Significant populations of binary systems and pairs have been found among asteroids from near-Earth to main belt orbits. Knowledge of their properties is important for understanding processes working in asteroids, including those that approach Earth and represent an impact hazard to our planet. We will study two key properties of binary and pair asteroids, their spins and orbit orientations, with a photometric method from Ondřejov Observatory and collaborating stations. We will estimate distributions of the spin and orbit properties in the populations, their dependences on component sizes, and their implications to theories of asteroid evolution mechanisms. For binaries, their proposed formation from critically spinning parent bodies spun up by the YORP effect predicts an anisotropic distribution of orbit poles. For asteroid pairs, theories of their formation via YORP-induced spin up and rotational fission and a dissociation of asteroid binaries predict a concentration of spins of pair primaries at fast rates. We will test the predictions with data obtained in our project. (en)
