Description
  • The most advanced optical atomic clocks have now reached levels of stability and accuracy that surpass the performance of the best caesium fountain primary standards. The Al+ optical clock at NIST has an estimated systematic uncertainty of 8.6 parts in 1018, and several other optical clocks have also reached uncertainties below 1 part in 1016. As a result, an optical redefinition of the SI second is being actively considered by the international metrology community. This JRP addresses the key steps that must be carried out before such a redefinition can take place, and will thus enable European NMIs to play an influential role in international debates on this matter.
