| - Probiotics are defined as %22live organisms which when consumed in adequate numbers confer a health benefit on the host beyond nutrition%22. Many bacterial strains with probiotic properties not only enable the maintenance of a healthy gut microflora protecting against gastrointestinal disorders, but they also exhibit immunomodulatory activity. Importantly, they seem to regulate the Th1/Th2 cytokine profile. Changes in the production of cytokines may influence the pharmacokinetics of drugs which depends on multiple factors such as their intestinal transport and enzymatic transformations by enzymes present in the gastrointestinal wall. For example, interferon-g can influence at least the intestinal efflux systems such as multidrug resistence-associated protein P-gp, and downregulates activity of cytochromes P450 and other enzymes responsible for bioactivation and detoxication of drugs. Despite of a broad, mainly off-medical prescription use of probiotics, data on possible/presumed interactions of probiotics with therapeutic effectiveness of concomitantly administered drugs are completely missing. The aim of the project is to contribute to this upcoming problem of pharmacotherapy. (en)
- Cílem projektu je studium vlivu probiotických bakterií na účinnost faramakoterapie. Budou sledovány parametry transportu léčiv přes střevní stěnu, jejich metabolismu a distribuce v organismu. Současně budou analyzovány imunobiologické vlastnosti probiotik a jejich vztah k farmakokinetice léčiv.
