Description
| - The aim of this study is to summarize and evaluate effects of triazine herbicides on fish to provide an assessment of current information on triazines. An important group of herbicides are triazines, which are extensively or selectively used in agriculture and in non-agricultural areas worldwide more than fifty years to control broadleaf and some grassy weeds. The triazine herbicides are still counted as the most commonly used herbicides all over the world. As consequence of this massive application, they are considerable unwelcome input factor especially in aquatic ecosystems. For many reasons, fish are important organisms for assessment of biological or biochemical responses to environmental contaminants, such as triazine herbicides. Understanding the absorption, behaviour and reactions of triazines in fish organism therefore has high ecological relevance. The effects of triazine herbicides exposure on the physiology of fish was evaluated by measuring a variety of parameters. Haematological and biochemical profiles of blood can provide important information about the internal environment of the organism and general physiology with health status of the triazine exposed fish. According to studies using biotransformation indices for estimation the effect of triazines on fish, the alterations in glutathione metabolism reflects the pollution of the fish environment by some triazine herbicides. The response of antioxidant defence system in the fish organism after exposition could be an adaptive mechanism to protect the fish from the triazine-induced oxidative stress but more investigation still should be done to potential risk assessment. Environmental concentrations of triazines affect reproduction or reproductive development in fish and although, some triazines did not affect fish behavior especially in long-term exposure to low concentrations, the impact on the overall behavioral response of fish can not be excluded.
