To develop and test environmentally friendly, low noise raiway bogies to reduce track damage. This project is aimed at developing a revolutionary design of cost effective bogie only possible by the use of advanced fibre reinforced plastics composites operating under extreme load bearing conditions in a hostile environment. The thick section composite bogie is created from a suitably aligned preform using resin transfer moulding to produce a cost effective product. If successfully demonstrated this will lead to an advance in bogie technology that could substantially reduce track and vehicle damage and environmental impact in terms of noise and ground borne vibration. The technology will be applicable to other sectors of industry where lightweight components also have to work under extreme static and fatigue load conditions such as road and marine transport.
