Description
  • Nitric oxide (NO) is investigated as a noninvasive method of assessing lung inflammation. Exhaled NO arises from the airway and alveolar compartments, and new analytical methods have been developed to quantify it in the exhaled air. Modelling is used to characterize NO exchange by using the flow-independent parameters such as the airway NO diffusing capacity and maximum airway wall NO flux, and the third parameter steady-state alveolar NO concentration that describes the alveolar region. A potential advantage of this approach over a simple measurement of the NO concentration is the ability to partition exhaled NO into an airway and alveolar source and thus improve the diagnostic accuracy and specificity of the method. The aims of the project are: 1/ to derive stable FENO concentrations of patients with allergy and asthma, and of healthy subjects from the time profiles of exhaled NO obtained using the single-breath method performed with five rates of exhalation into a chemiluminiscence analyser (en)
