Soil restoration is a crucial precondition of successful reconstruction of ecosystems and ecosystem services after mining activities. Soil organisms play a principal role in soil forming processes and at the same time they represent sensitive indicators of soil quality. The aim of the project is to study the bioindication potential of soil biota in post mining soils, its recovery after cessation of mining and its role in soil formation. Potential of the results for reclamation practice will be highlighted. The study will be carried out in three areas of coal mining in the U.S.A. (Tennessee, Illinois and Wyoming) located on continentality gradient (from Atlantic climate on the east to continental climate on the west side of the gradient). In all these areas the sites reclaimed by prevailing technology typical for each particular area up to 15 years ago will be studied in the first and the last year of the study together with sites located in undisturbed target ecosystems.
