Description
| - Phylum Apicomplexa represents the most successful group of eukaryotic parasites consisting entirely of parasitic genera that infect a wide spectrum of vertebrates and invertebrates. Many of them are etiologic agents of the globally significant human diseases, such as malaria, toxoplasmosis and cryptosporidiosis. Our ability to control diseases caused by apicomplexan parasites is still limited for a number of reasons including the lack of effective vaccines or drugs. This project is dedicated to the comparative study of early dispersed apicomplexan branches, focused especially on gregarines and cryptosporidia. Mapping the diversity of host-parasite interactions resulting from phylogenetic adaptations is crucial to understand the overall picture of apicomplexan evolutionary strategy at the cellular level and to reevaluate their phylogenetic affinities. Improved knowledge of deep-branching apicomplexans, including gregarines and gregarine-like organisms, would offer significant insights into the fascinating biology of this enigmatic parasitic group. This could facilitate exploration of new possibilities of practical applications, such as novel therapeutics for some diseases caused by apicomplexans. (en)
Hlubší poznání raných zástupců Apicomplexa včetně gregarin a jim příbuzných organizmů umožní lépe proniknout do fascinující biologie této enigmatické skupiny parazitů a prozkoumat další možnosti praktických aplikací, jako například nová terapeutika směrovaná proti některým onemocněním způsobených výtrusovci.
