DEFINITION
  • Abnormal growth of the glial cells that comprise the brainstem. This tumor is most easily detected on MRI. The form with the poorest prognosis (median survival of about 12 months) appears to be the diffusely infiltrative pontine lesion. However, it is important to note whether the patient has neurofibromatosis since the literature appears to show a more favorable prognosis for diffuse tumors in patients with neurofibromatosis type I. The dorsally exophytic brainstem lesions has a slightly better expected survival. Brainstem glioma is most commonly found in children. There are preliminary findings in the literature that seem to indicate that adults with brainstem gliomas may have a better survival time.
