Description
| - Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are used as flame retardants especially in plastics. PBDEs are highly toxic. They can accumulate in tissues of living organisms, including humans, and present a potential health hazard. Despite the ban on the manufacturing of two out of the three commercially used PBDE mixtures, PBDEs are globally widespread and their concentration in the environment has increased significantly during the last few years. In order to decrease the environmental impact of PBDEs and to stop their spread in the food chain different degradation methods have been investigated. Two methods for the degradation of PBDEs were evaluated in this study. The chemical NZVI (nano zerovalent iron) degradation yielded very good results. The best results, however, were achieved by electrochemical degradation. A new electrochemical method that had not been previously reported in the literature was developed. The method employs an electrochemical microreactor. The original experi
