Flood protection levees have limited reliability due to their design parameters (namely design discharge), sub-base characteristics and other factors. In case of hydrological characteristics – extreme discharges – their increase can be anticipated as a consequence of climate changes. Experience from historical floods shows that levees should be completed by emergency spillways enabling localisation of overtopping and thus reduce danger of uncontrolled breaching in case when design discharge was exceeded. The second most frequent failure mode is internal erosion in levees or their sub-base. The problems of seepage and deformation due to seepage and seepage erosion progress are still not satisfactory solved worldwide. The aim of the project proposed is the research of problems dealing with reliability and safety of flood protection levees at both research areas mentioned above. The solution will focus on the study of design parameters and structural arrangement of emergency spillways at levees, the m (en)
