Description
  • Gel electrophoresis is one of the most frequently used methods in life-sciences research. Electrophoresis is a chemical separation method based on the effect of electric field on the particles. In this paper we present our proposed method for evaluating the results of gel electrophoresis images - electrophoreogram. The evaluation of the electrophoreogram images, i.e. to determine the molecular weight of divided particles, is commonly used commercial software. Our method segments image, automatically extracts the brightness curves across individual lanes, finds divided substances (bands) in these curves and calculates molecular weight of divided substances. We implemented the method and verified its success in comparison with commercial software on electrophoreogram images acquired using sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). We found that the proposed method gives reliable results comparable with the evaluation using commercial software. Our method allows in comparison with commercial software faster and easier evaluation of the electrophoreogram images mainly due to segmentation of images.
