  • Tento příspěvek se zabývá problematikou efektivního využití energie v oblasti termického zpracování odpadů (tzv. waste-to-energy). V současnosti nelze na moderní spalovnu nahlížet jako na zařízení na pouhé odstraňování odpadů. Proces spalování odpadů je doprovázen uvolněním velkého množství energie, která musí být účelně využita (např. výroba páry a její export spotřebitelům , výroba elektřiny, kogenerace). Kromě hlavní funkce spalovny, čímž je zpracování daného množství odpadů, systémy waste-to-energy do jisté míry mohou nahradit konvenční energetická zařízení spalující fosilní paliva a tím přispět k řešení globálních environmentálních problémů. Pro hodnocení efektivity spaloven z pohledu využití energie lze například použít metodiku uvedenou v příručce BREF Nejlepší dostupné techniky pro spalovny odpadů. An up-to-date incineration plant cannot be considered as only waste disposal facility. The waste combustion (incineration) processes are accompanied by release of large amount of energy, that shall be effectively utilized (e.g. steam production and its export to consumers, power generation, cogeneration). In addition to the main purpose of incineration, i.e. treating the specified amount of waste, waste-to-energy systems are able to some extent substitute conventional energy production plants fired by fossil fuel and thus to contribute to solving global environmental problems.
