Description
  • The antimicrobial activity of caprylic and capric acid was intestigated in pure cultures of 10 strains of bacteria isolated from the digestive tract of monogastric animals (5 rabbit isolates), 10 strains of enteropathogenic bacteria, and in incubations of the rabbit caecal contents. Both caprylic and capric acid inhibited production of volatile fatty acids and gas. and increased production of lactate in incubations of the rabbit caecal contents. The inhibitory effects of both acids were similar. In caecr. In caecal incubations, effects of caprylic and capric acid were more pronounced that those of oleic, palmitic and stearic acid. It can be concluded that caprylic and capric acid are efficient antimicrobials both in pure bacterial cultures grown on glucose and in digesta samples incubated in vitro. In our opinion, both acids are usable as feed additives for young rabbits in the post-weaning period.
