Description	The karyotype of Raiamas steindachneri was analyzed by Giemsa staining and sequential silver-staining. The diploid chromosome number was 2n = 50 (8 pairs of metacentric, 15 submetacentric and 2 pairs of subtelocentric chromosomes). The nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) were situated in the telomeric region of shorter arms of one submetacentric pair, Very probably No. 12 in size. This first report for any of the African non-cyprinine cyprinid fishes stresses the need of other karyotypic data to reveal cytotaxonomic relationships of both African and Asian bariliine cyprinids.
