Description
  • The study focuses on an anatomical analysis of six samples of subfossil oak found in the area of Moravia and two samples of recent oak (Quercus robur L. and Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl.) from the same area. In the selected samples, particular anatomical parameters (tree ring width, surface area of the largest earlywood vessel, mean surface area of all earlywood vessels, and mean surface area of the first row of earlywood vessels) were explored within each tree ring in the cross-section both at macroscopic and microscopic level. Subsequently, the age trend of individual parameters was examined and the species of the oak wood was identified. The results show a decreasing trend in the width and surface area of tree rings in dependence on age, and on the other hand, a slightly increasing or stable trend in the surface area of the largest earlywood vessel, the mean surface area of all earlywood vessels and the mean surface area of the first line of earlywood vessels. The results show that all subfossil samples were the English oak (Quercus robur L.).
