Description
| - The chapter deals with the complementation of the ingressive phasal verbs begin and start through the historical perspective. Primarily the focus is on their distribution in Old English using the OE corpus; Middle English distribution is then analysed using the ME corpus, and finally there is an overview of the current situation verified in the BNC. The analysis reveals that there have always been several ways of expressing ingressive phasal verbs in English, and there have always been several possibilities of complementation. Originally the complementation of the verb was influenced by the preceding and following syntactic elements, and later by semantics. While the much older verb begin has been associated with various types of complementation (mostly with the infinitive) since OE, the verb start, which appears in its phasal function for the first time in the 18th century, has always been frequently used with the -ing form.
