Description
  • The grain boundaries, GB, and the annealing twin boundaries, TB, of the austenitic stainless steel AISI 316L were electrolytically etched in oxalic acid. The fraction of the attacked grain boundaries, GBatt/GB, and of attacked twin boundaries, TBatt/TB, were evaluated with help of metallographic microscope on the specimens aged at 650 °C with different durations. Topography in the etched grain boundaries and in the etched annealing twin boundaries was investigated by AFM(Atomic Force Microscopy).The depths of the grain boundaries grooves and the depths of the etched twin boundaries were evaluated quantitatively. Further, the depth of the dimples on the grain boundaries due to dissolution of M23C6 carbides during electrolytic etching in oxalic acid wereevaluated, if the specimen were aged for a long time at 650°C.
