Description
  • Geoinformatics is concerned, among others, with the mapping, modelling and study of processes in time and space. These can be natural (e.g. erosion, slope failures, folding) and man-induced (for instance, formation of subsidence troughs in undermined areas). Geoinformatics offers suitable methods and tools enabling the application of new procedures for the assessment of their impacts on the environment. Deep extraction of minerals is mostly accompanied by deformations of the strata overlying extracted coal seams. Deformations of overlying layers run up to the surface where a subsidence trough gradually forms. Drops and formation of the subsidence trough result from the processes that take place in the strata overlying extracted coal seams. The proposed method of assessment of failure of the rigid strata overlying extracted coal seams is based on the long-term and systematic monitoring of subsidence of the surface using geodetic methods and on the comparison of the results with the development of mined-out areas and with their extracted thickness. For the specification of the time of failure of the overlying strata, information obtained from the system of continuous seismological monitoring of seismic events was also used; it enables their location in time and space. In solving the geodetic monitoring of subsidence of the surface, it was necessary to cooperate with geodesists of mine enterprises. An advantage of the application of geoinformation technologies is the fulfilment of the goal which is to integrate the relevant knowledge of the studied real world, obtained by various methods and to provide source data required for the assessment of failure of the overlying strata.
