Description	Electricity and heat production in the Czech Republic is largely based on the use of indigenous raw materials, i.e., brown coal. This is reflected in the existence of large surface mines – quarries, with the appropriate equipment, for ensuring the supply of the required fuel quantities. Because of the delays in the approval of the update of the National Energy Concept and legislative changes, one of the surface mines is facing the risk that the continuity of brown coal supply will be disrupted and the mine, including its equipment, will be shut down, i.e., the site will be completely mothballed. A project like this for a surface mine with an annual production of more than 10 million cubic metres of extracted material has not yet been carried out in the Czech Republic. The paper discusses the impacts of the decision to shut down and mothball the surface mine from the economic point of view, taking into account the necessary safety measures required by the applicable legislation. In the conclusion, the authors also touch upon the issue of the surface mine’s reopening.
