Description	The aim of the 16th International Conference on Nonlinear Elasticity in Materials (ICNEM) was put together all researchers throughout the world, interested in dynamic nonlinear elastic behaviour of different materials observed in various physical disciplines and applications. Non equilibrium dynamics,/ /first studied in earth materials has now been observed in a great variety of solids. The link between the diverse materials that exhibit non equilibrium dynamics appears to be the presence of soft regions, thought to be primarily 'damage' at many scales, ranging from order 10-6 to 10 m at least. The physical origin of the behaviour is clear in some cases, but in many others is not yet well understood. Because the nonlinear phenomena are mostly related to damage, the main application is damage diagnostics in solids known as a Nonlinear Non Destructive Evaluation. Non equilibrium dynamics also plays a significant role in other areas such as earthquake dynamics.
