Description
| - In recent years there is increasing interest in the use of biosurfactants as alternatives to chemical surfactants, especially in remediation processes. Biosurfactants are more suitable because of their lower toxicity and better biodegradability in the environment. They are surface active compounds with variable structure produced by microorganisms. The most known biosurfactants are glycolipids. They consist of carbohydrates in combination with long-chain aliphatic acids or hydroxyaliphatic acids. The most important group of glycolipids are rhamnolipids. Rhamnolipids contain one or two molecules of rhamnose and one or two molecules of hydroxy aliphatic acids. Production of rhamnose-containing glycolipid was first described in pathogenic bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Since this time many rhamnolipid producers have been described, for example Pseudomonas putida, Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, Enterobacter asburiae, Burkholderia glumae. These bacterial strains are more suitable for rhamnolipid production than Pseudomonas aeruginosa, due to their lower pathogenesis. In this review are described rhamnolipid producers, physicochemical properties and potential applications of rhamnolipids.
