Description
  • Paenibacillus larvae, a Gram-positive spore-forming bacterium, is the causative agent of the American foulbrood (AFB), one of the most serious and destructive brood diseases of honeybees. AFB is a problem for beekeepers world-wide. In many countries, AFB is a notifiable disease and most authorities consider burning of diseased colonies and contaminated hive material the only workable control measure. Thus, AFB causes considerable economic loss to beekeepers all over the world. In some countries, antibiotics (e.g. oxytetracycline) are used to suppress the clinical symptoms and, hence, the outbreak of AFB. The major drawbacks of this treatment are that residues of the antibiotics could be found in honeybee products, and oxytetracycline-resistant P. larvae-strains have developed making the quest for new effective antibiotics already necessary [1]. Within our previous study of the chemical composition and antibacterial activity of the fruits of Paulownia tomentosa, we have isolated eight geranylflavo
