  • The Bohemian Forest was exposed to a heavy atmospheric pollution during the last century. Total emissions of S and N compounds increased slowly until 1950, then rapidly in the 1950-1980 period, peaked in the 1980s, and declined markedly between the middle 1980s and 2000. A possible negative effect of atmospheric pollution on the tree physiology has been studied using isotopic composition,  13C, of the tree rings. The  13C of the tree rings represents a useful diagnostic tool that provides information about current and former physiological state of the trees. The wood is depleted in 13C relative to the air due to isotopic discrimination against 13C during photosynthesis. The depletion is expressed as 13C (13C =  13Catmosphere -  13Cwood). A decrease in  13C implies on negative effect of the environmental conditions on the tree physiology. Two cores were sampled from near breast height of Norway spruce (over 200 years old) from
