Description
  • In 2004-2005, a phytocoenological survey was carried out in different production areas under either long-term organic or conventional farming systems in the Czech Republic. Weed species richness was evaluated and Shannon-Wiener diversity (H´) and evenness (E) indexes were calculated in winter cereals and root crops. Higher weed species richness was documented in agrophytocoenosis managed by organic farming. Statistically significant differences were found between individual organic farms. Mean weed species richness on the area 1 m2 in winter cereals reached 5.65 and 9.00 in conventional farming, 11.35 and 15.65 in organic farming, and in root crops 2.83 and 1.67 in conventional and 5.90 and 13.87 in organic farming. In almost all cases weed communities were more diverse in organic farming compared with conventional farming (H´ on the conventional areas ranged from 0.19 to 1.77, on organic farming areas from 1.12 to 2.12).
