Description
  • Since antibiotics have been prohibited as feed additives for livestock, many additives have been proposed for application to milk replacers for young ruminants. Potential replacements include oligosaccharides, plasma proteins, fatty acid, and probiotic bacteria, namely lactobacilli, enterococci, and bifidobacteria. The aim of our study was to select new probiotic bifidobacterial strains for lambs mainly according to their ability to survive in in vivo conditions. Bifidobacteria were isolated from lamb’s faeces using modified TPY agar according to Rada and Petr (2000). Isolates were identified to the genus level by the detection of fructose-6-phosphate phosphoketolase activity and to the species level according to their carbohydrate fermentation profiles (Biavati and Mattarelli, 1991). Functional properties (survival ability in low pH and bile condition) were tested (Mättö et al., 2004). From the selected strains, rifampicin-resistant bifidobacteria (RRBs) were prepared using gradient plate techniq
