Description
  • Soils are one of the major layers of the landscape sphere and they affect a large number of human activities. Also, soils can significantly influence traffic in the areas with the sparse communication infrastructure or, if necessary, move-ment off the communications. The very detailed mapping of the soil conditions took place in the 1960s in the former Czechoslovakia. That mapping was primarily intended to support the agriculture but now it can be employed in other ways as well. One of them is production of the soils trafficability maps of the Czech Republic, which form one of the input layers of the Cross-Country Movement (CCM) assessment for the deployment requirements of the rescue teams and military units. These maps were created utilizing the original soil mapping and several years’ long measurement of the soil pene-trometric resistance at various locations of the Czech Republic. The specialists of the Department of Military Geography and Meteorology carried out measurements in different climatic periods and under various meteorological conditions. The results of the CCM analysis were validated using knowledge of technical parameters of vehicles, values obtained from measurements and real vehicles tests in different soil types. These results are transferred into the soil trafficability maps, terrain trafficability databases and other products being provided for the use within the Czech Army.
