Description
  • The formation of silk fiber in Lepidoptera is based on interactions between amino acid repeats in the major silk protein, heavy chain fibroin (H-fibroin). The processing of H-fibroin with hydrophobic repeats is facilitated by L-fibroin and P25 protein, which are lacking in saturniid moths that produce H-fibroin with amphiphilic repeats. Fiber properties depend on the nature, regularity, and higher order organization of the repeats. In the %22bombycoid%22 type, strings of 2-13 short motifs such as GAGAGS are interrupted by spacers which prevent excessive crystallization. In the %22pyraloid%22 H-fibroin, assemblies of several complex motifs constitute highly regular repeats. Amino acids with bulky side chains participate in H-fibroin crosslinking. Repeat homogeneity appears crucial for the alignment and interaction of the disjunct motifs that must be precisely registered to form crystallites
