Description
| - Plum pox virus (PPV) causes serious economic losses in cultivated stone fruit species in the world and causes the Sharka or „plum pox“ disease of Prunus species. In this study, during 2011 - 2012, the health status of the production apricot orchards in the Czech Republic was monitored, including the monitoring of the presence of PPV. Production orchards in the region of Central and East Region were evaluated. The samples were collected from symptomatic as well as asymptomatic trees in the all production orchards. PPV virus was detected by DAS-ELISA using the universal PPV monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies. The samples evaluated as suspicious or positive for the presence of PPV were analyzed for the identification of different strains of PPV using the RT-PCR method. During 2011-2012 the total of 1896 trees were examined in five production orchards, where different cultivars and newly bred cultivars were grown. Based on visual assessment of symptomatic trees only 1 PPV infected tree was recorded and the presence of the PPV-D strain was confirmed by laboratory methods. The PPV virus was not confirmed in other 96 samples collected from the trees without typical symptoms. No differences were found between the obtained results and visual assessment of the PPV presence. Based on the monitoring of PPV, the extensive infection was monitored in most of the apricot plantations. The minimal PPV infection rate was found in a single apricot orchard, that was intended for disposal. Compliance with phytosanitary measures, such as using of controlled certified plant material for the establishment of the new orchad, control and disposal of infection sources situated nearly the production orchards and in some cases the use of resistant varieties have a significant impact on maintaining long-term good health condition of apricot plantations in terms of PPV infection. The survey of the health status of trees in apricot production orchards is still in progres.
