Description
  • Because of the long term use of woody perennial fruit crops, it is important to start with clean material, which can be reliably obtained only through certification schemes. In the Research and Breeding Institute of Pomology (RBIP) Holovousy Ltd., located in the Czech Republic, production of virus-free propagation stock of apple, pear, plum and cherry trees was conducted according to the certification schemes (EPPO 2001a, EPPO 2001b, EPPO 2001c) between 2002-2012. As a result, a total of 1598 virus free fruit trees were tested on woody indicators. A total of 140 apple trees were tested, using Virginia Crab, Golden Delicious, Lord Lambourne, R 12 (or Malus platycarpa) and SPY 227 indicators. A total of 21 varieties of virus free apple trees were obtained. A total of 58 pear trees were tested, using Pyronia veitchii and Beurré Hardy indicators. A total of 21 varieties of virus free pear trees were obtained. A total of 1295 plum plants were tested, using GF 305 indicator for plum fruit viruses and phytoplasma. A total of 69 varieties of virus free plum trees were obtained. A total of 105 cherry trees were tested, using Bing, Sam, Canindex, Shirofugen and GF 305 indicators. A total of 10 varieties of virus free cherry trees were obtained. All the certified fruit trees should be free of agents mentioned in the certification schemes for apple, pear, plum and cherry trees. During testing and thanks to the reliability of woody indicators, the following diseases were diagnosed in the candidate plants: ACLSV, ApMV, ASGV, ASPV, apple proliferation, pear decline, PDV, PNRSV, PPV, ESFY, CNRMV. These candidate plants were eliminated from the certification scheme and replaced by healthy trees, or they were treated fot their diseases. Certification schemes allow production of the highest quality plant material within the Czech Republic.
