Description
| - Biomarkers are one of the newest approaches to the monitoring of bioremediation process and can be used for the biodegradability prediction of oil contamination in soil or water. Biomarkers are substances contained in oil that are almost resistant to biodegradation. The following three substances were selected as markers: phytane, pristane and hopane. When the results of analyses are evaluated to specify the state of an oil substance or describe a biodegradation process, biomarkers are provided as ratios of particular homologues of the compounds or as a ratio between a particular biomarker and a more easily degradable component of the system. Such ratios are called biomarker indexes.
