Description
  • Airborne particulate matter (PM) is a mixture of many subclasses of pollutants with each one containing many different chemical species. PM contains a large number of substances capable of endangering human health. The aim of this study was to identify which size-fraction of urban particulate matter has most dominant effect on human health. We wanted to assess this with integration of four approaches: chemical analyse, biological analyse, mineralogical and geochemical analyses. Air samples were collected using a high-volume samplers with six stage cascade impactor (Thermo Andersen, USA) to separate the six fractions according to their aerodynamic size. The amount of particles was determined by gravimetric method. Short-term genotoxicity test was used for the genototoxicity detection. Results were compared with chemical analyses, mineralogical and geochemical characterisation of samples.
