The project looks at care for seniors in society, noting the range of options for caring for the needs of the elderly and the continuing decline in families able and prepared to care for their seniors. The project compares families that care for a senior at home and families that have secured institutional social or health care for a family senior. The objective is to assess the role and significance of %22family cohesion%22 based on a sample of factors involved in opting for one of these extreme solutions or an entire scale of in-between models of senior care. The first six to eight months of the project will focus on developing a %22family cohesion index%22. A survey carried out in the project's second year will focus on two groups of seniors requiring personal care and on their family networks and %22family cohesion%22. The first group will involve seniors whose families have secured them professional, institutionalised social or health care, and the second will involve seniors cared for in the home, either just by family members and or with the help of field services.
