(cs)
Occupational and environmental mutagens and carcinogens constitute a significant source of health risk. This project is focused on the study of specific biomarkers of the DNA damage by xenobiotics and on the development of analytical methods to detect and quantitate specific DNA adducts in urine. Adenine and guanine DNA adducts derived from styrene and benzene, which have been synthesised in our laboratory, will be used as authentic standards to develop sensitive and specific analytical methods for their determination in urine. Formation of the DNA adducts derived from 3-nitrobenzanthrone, an extremely potent environmental mtagen, will be studied in model experiments and their potential use in biological monitoring will be evaluated.
