The project aims at studying the structure of the proton as revealed in electron-positron and electron-proton collisions. It addresses two important open problems. The first concerns the relation between the so-called direct and resolved components of the photon at the next-to-leading order of perturbytive QCD and aims at determining the numerical importance of the NLO direct component to the production of jets in electron-positron and electron-proton collisions. The second problem concerns the dependence of the photon structure functions on its virtuality. We intend to investigate this dependence in various theoretical models and furthermore to analyze the possibility to extract this dependence from the data obtained in the DELPHI experiment at LEP 2, which will become available in the near future.
