Description
  • Bladder cancer is respectively the 4th and the 8th most common malignancy in men and in women. It is crucial to detect this tumour at its early intraepithelial stages. The historical analysis of the Hexvix story presented in this chapter illustrates the importance of each of the individual steps that led to the development of a new technique of an early bladder cancer photo-detection: the fluorescence cystoscopy using hexyl-ester of 5-aminolevulinic acid (HAL). Resulting from academic innovations that were patented in due time, the development of the technology was followed by effective transfer to industry and further development by pharmaceutical industry. Finally, under the names of Hexwix or Cysview, the fluorescence cystoscopy using HAL obtained approval by regulatory authorities and reimbursement in many countries.
