Description
| - The nuclear technology of accelerator-driven-systems is part of the world-wide attempts to solve the problem of CO2-free generaton of energy together with simultaneous attempts to ameliorate the problem of the final deposition of long-lived radioactive waste produced in conventional nuclear power plants. This solves also the Laboratory of High Energies with it´s new accelerator NUCLOTRON within the Joint Institute of Nuclear Research in Dubna, Russia. Research project called%22Energy and Transmutation%22 is based on a massive lead target surrounded by an uranium blanket. So far, proton beams with energies in the range of 0.7 up to 2.0 GeV were used for transmutation studies of gram-range radioactive samples of 129I, 237Np and 239Pu. Now, first results with 2.52 GeV deuteron beam are introduced. A variety of different experimental techniques has been employed, such as classical radiochemistry, Solid State Nuclear Track Detectors, nuclear emulsions and uranium fission calori
